Update: The new Fenix 7 and Epix have landed – read all about the latest Garmins.

Garmin has rolled out a massive update to the Fenix 6, adding new sports modes and improving the accuracy of its flagship watch.

All eyes are on the launch of a new Fenix 7 – but it seems that Garmin is still putting its efforts into its existing Fenix device. Software version 20.30 (also rolling out to Garmin Marq) has a huge list of fixes – and is an essential upgrade for any Fenix user.

Back in August 2021, Garmin released a major update for the Fenix 6, which added the Rate of Perceived Exhaustion (RPE) features, and fitness age metrics – but this is arguably bigger.

Most interestingly, the new update adds some new sports to track – adding to the mindboggling array of Fenix activities. The company has added an array of support for biking, with eBike, eMTB, Cyclocross, Gravel Bike, Bike Commute, Bike Tour, and Road Bike.

But Garmin has also added HIIT (about time), show shoeing, tennis, padel and pickleball – to the delight of pickleballers everywhere…whoever they are.

Aside from new sports, the Fenix 6 tracking algorithms have also been given a good service.

The lactate threshold feature, which estimates your endurance performance, has been improved, as has the acclimatization feature.

Yoga and breathwork workout types can now use a chest strap for HRV measurement, too.

And the pulse ox feature has also been improved, with the UI overhauled, and the Fenix will tell you if it’s struggled to take a reading due to arm movement.

There’s also a heap of minor bug fixes too, most of which we’ve never encountered, but will undoubtedly improve the experience of the Fenix 6. You can see a full list of the 20.30 update notes here.

This big update as the new Fenix 7 has been announced by Garmin.

The Fenix 7 will carry on from the Fenix 6 in terms of design, build and ethos around advanced tracking and battery longevity – with some new additions such as overhauled mapping and touchscreen.
