Peloton has released its long-awaited app for Wear OS 3 smartwatches. The app is available now for all Wear OS 3 watches, including the Google Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, and Fossil Gen 6.

The Peloton app for Wear OS 3 allows you to track your heart rate during Peloton workouts.

To use the Peloton app on your Wear OS 3 watch, you'll need to update the Peloton app on your phone, and then pair your watch with your Peloton bike or treadmill.

Once you're paired, you can open the Peloton app on your watch and start a workout.

It works for owners of Peloton’s bikes and treadmills but also its rower and strength training system.

The watchOS version came out over a year ago, so Wear OS users have had to wait.

But it's a good sign for Wear OS that its app ecosystem is becoming more robust, and Peloton launching this new app is evidence of that.

Creating a more robust app ecosystem was a key aim of Google’s big Wear OS reset.

And adding the volume of smartwatches offered by the likes of Samsung, and the Pixel Watch, had added fuel to that.

We simply can’t see that Peloton would have created this app for Wear OS a couple of years ago.

But it won't be available for older Wear OS 2 smartwatches.

However, it still goes to show the fragmentation and confusion around Wear OS, and the power structures within the ecosystem. News of the Peloton app launch was touted by Samsung, who announced that it was coming to Galaxy Watch. But it neglected to mention that other Wear OS watches are also part of the launch, which caused initial confusion.

Samsung has had a two-year headstart on Wear OS, and seemed to have exclusivity on the platform until the Google Pixel Watch launched in 2022.

While Fossil and others have now updated their watches to Wear OS 6, we’re STILL waiting for Mobvoi, which has just revealed it could update its watches in Q3 2023.
